visitors.

so my older sister is finally making a homecoming after years of absence. she will be bringing her 17 mo old baby for the first time, and her WOW-addicted husband will be tagging along. all 3 visitors will be a rarity for different reasons. the occasion? my grandpa will be making his every other year coming-to-america sojourn to keep his greencard active. many relatives have wrung their hands eagerly to gaze upon my little nephew. most have not set eyes upon him aside from photos.

oh, and i did something mean yesterday. my sister was sharing concerns that my nephew's language may be delayed. i informed her that i worked with speech delayed kids (that part wasn't a lie) but when she told me he only had 3 words, although he babbled, i concluded that he must be semi-retarded because by 1 year of age, the child should have at least 100 words. OK, so i thought i might be mistaken so i verified it when i got into my office. apparently, i was wrong. by 12 mos of age, the child should have about 10 words; by 18 mos, 10-100 words. still, i was close and 3 words still sounds like way too few for a 17 mo. old. so i called her back and assured her 3 words wasn't too bad but she is still going to take him to a speech and hearing specialist, per the pediatrician's rec. i can't believe she hasn't even had his hearing checked! so at least i redeemed myself, right?

sorry sista. :(
